Taking the first step toward professional mental health help is often the hardest part of the journey. When you are in the middle of a depressive crash or a severe anxiety attack, the “unknown” of a clinical evaluation can feel overwhelming.
At Urgent Psych, our goal is to make your same-day mental health assessment as transparent and supportive as possible. Whether you are visiting from Sandy Springs or utilizing our Dunwoody service area resources, here is exactly what you can expect when you walk through our doors.
What is a Mental Health Assessment?
Think of a mental health assessment as a “diagnostic physical” for your brain and emotions. It is a structured conversation between you and a licensed psychiatric professional designed to understand your symptoms, history, and immediate needs. Unlike a general hospital ER, which focuses on physical triage, our evaluations are specialized for psychiatric stabilization.
What to Expect During Your Visit
When you arrive at our clinic (or log in for telehealth urgent psychiatric care), the process typically follows these four steps:
1. Intake and Documentation
You will provide basic information regarding your medical history, current medications, and the primary reason for your visit. This helps our clinicians understand the mind-body connection and any physical factors impacting your mood.
2. The Clinical Interview
You will meet with a provider to discuss what you are experiencing. They may ask about:
- The timeline of your symptoms (e.g., “When did you stop being able to sleep?”).
- Your mood swings and emotional stability.
- Any history of substance use or previous psychiatric treatments.
3. Immediate Diagnostic Feedback
At Urgent Psych, we don’t believe in making you wait weeks for answers. Once the interview is complete, your provider will offer a preliminary clinical impression and discuss immediate steps for stabilization.
4. Stabilization and Safety Planning
If appropriate, we initiate Integrated Medication Management. We also work with you to create a safety plan, ensuring you have the tools to manage your symptoms until your next follow-up.
Clinical Disclaimer: Urgent Psych cannot prescribe controlled medications, as their safe use requires long-term treatment planning and monitoring with a primary or specialty provider.
How to Prepare for Your Assessment
You do not need to “study” for an assessment, but a little preparation can help you feel more in control of the process.
- Bring a Medication List: Know the names and dosages of any medications (psychiatric or otherwise) you are currently taking.
- Identify Your “Main Concern”: If you could change one thing about how you feel right now (e.g., “I need to stop the panic attacks” or “I need to be able to sleep”), what would it be?
- Be Honest About Substance Use: We are a non-judgmental, medical environment. Knowing the truth about substance use allows us to treat you safely and effectively.
- Bring a Support Person: If you feel too overwhelmed to talk, you are welcome to bring a trusted friend or family member into the intake process.
Why Speed Matters in an Evaluation
Choosing our specialized center over a Psychiatric ER means you get expert eyes on your situation immediately. Early intervention can prevent a “bad week” from turning into a life-altering crisis.
| Preparation Step | Why It Helps |
| Current Med List | Prevents drug interactions and speeds up stabilization. |
| Symptom Journal | Helps the clinician see patterns in your mood. |
| Openness | Ensures the most accurate diagnosis possible. |
